La Muerta Promo Video

The Carnies Are Coming! from La Muerta † on Vimeo.

This is a very impressive. It's good to see something new and original to promote a t-shirt company. You need to create a buzz and stand out. From what I can see, the designs were nothing spectacular or maybe that's more of a personal preference, but what was done is really good. Whether you're working with a client or trying to promote yourself, you need to stand out. Something like this may be inspirational.

For those who are interested, the brand just launched today. http://lamuerta.mx/

Johnny Cupcakes London Cartoon

For those of you that don't know the clothing company Johnny Cupcakes, it is a cool Boston company focusing the designs around cupcakes. Mr. Johnny Cupcakes, John Earle, created this company as a joke and eventually it became a million dollar company. The designs are fun, clean, simple, and quirky. The tees are pricey, but Johnny Cupcakes likes to make only a small amount of shirts which make them exclusive. He's constantly releasing new designs and has a 3 shops, two in the Boston area and 1 in Los Angeles. He's about to open his 4th shop in London.

His branding is all about himself and being a fun and family type of guy. He's an everyday guy that inspires many people and his fanbase is huge. I've met him twice and he cares about his customers. He's always trying to come up with creative ways to get people involved and interested in his brand. The brand development is amazing and he's done something new that no clothing line has really played around with....animation. This is an animation promoting his London store opening. It may not be the greatest cartoon, but it gives him an edge of being the first one to do it and gives his customers something to look forward for. I've seen this video being passed along and I am continuing that as well.

I do think that his marketing of his brand is brilliant and worth looking at. If you are ever around to see one of his lectures, you should head to it. His style is unorthodox, since he didn't go to business school and dropped out of college. It's different, but I'm sure you may learn a thing or two that could be useful in your business.

Link: The Marketing Magic Behind Harry Potter

This a very good article whether you're a small company or someone with a product and looking to expand into business. There are five points discussed in this article. They are:
1. A Good Product
2. Emotional Involvement
3. Word-of-Mouth Marketing and an Online Buzz
4. Tease and Perpetual Marketing
5. Brand Consistency and Restraint

I feel even as a design you can use what is said in the article and help market yourself as a designer. Maybe you do not agree with what is mentioned, but it a good article to have seen.

"The story of Harry Potter on the printed page and big screen is just as magical as the story of Harry Potter from a marketing and branding perspective, and it's one that all marketers and business owners can learn from.
Here are five key elements that helped drive the success of the Harry Potter brand, which small business owners can implement, too. While your level of success might not reach the multi-billion dollar brand value that Harry Potter has reached, by applying these strategies to your marketing plan, you'll position yourself for long-term, sustainable business growth."

Package Design: Coca-Cola Mystic

French designer Jerome Olivet offers a new look of what Coca-Cola bottles may look like in the future. The branding of Coca-Cola is absolutely remarkable and their marketing is unquestionable. There's a reason that they are the number 1 soda.

Looking at what Jerome Olivet's design doesn't say timeless or classic. Is it cool looking? Of course and it does include the signature Coca-Cola red. The design itself is nicely done, but does it really fit that classic all time great quality that Coke has? The quality is there, but this is cool for a bit. Sure, some people may want to buy, because the bottle design is creative. Does it really make you want to drink it? Watching the video and what it's trying to promote with "Mystic" is "Sexy", "Supernatural", and "Fascinating"? Like a lot of newer cars today, this design has a sleek look, which supposedly is sexy. The main goal is to have you buy their soda, but over time Coca Cola developed an image that used to market to everyone explaining this is what to expect when you drink Coke. Ok, cool. Brand identity is important and you have to have some niche to separate yourself, but I don't think sexy when I drink soda. I would use "sexy" for a high end alcoholic beverage which caters to clubs and lounges, who have people that are dressed sexy.

It also looks like some space ship, which is what makes it "supernatural". The design is futuristic and looks like it wants to appeal to a younger generation. It could fit for a sports drink. This type of design would work best for a soda that appeals to a young crowd, maybe like Sprite or Mountain Dew(yes, I know they're owned by Pepsi). Those drinks have branded themselves as the cooler soda, while Coke appeals to everyone and has a taste everyone would love.

The last phrase that was used in the video was "Fascinating" and I do agree that the design does look really good. That would catch your eye, but would you buy on image alone? Jerome Olivet does have talent, because this a good looking package design.

This is what Jerome Olivet had to say about his design,

""MYSTIC surprised by its beauty and intensity. It was created to live an intense and fleeting moment. Its racy style describes a supernatural world that soars skyward. Its skin has a sculpted unique spiritual experience.
We discover in the palm of our hand soft and aerodynamic forms. Its living surface is shaped by a force mysterious and transparent. It send us all the energy and excitement of Coca-Cola Its sexy lines and red color give happiness in 3 dimensions.
Both organic shapes intertwine and form a body ambiguous and fascinating. Its loving silhouette, ties into a true popular poetry."
"

I think it is a nice pitch from Jerome Olivet, who had people writing about his design and may have caught some companies attention. I do not feel that it works with Coca-Cola so much, but if they decide to create Coca-Cola Mystic and want to use the phrase of what Olivet think it should represent, they have a winner. You do have to appreciate the real clean look of the product shots and video.

What are your thoughts?

Unbranding: The Snooki Strategy

Last week I was reading on Inc.com about "unbranding". If you saw my tweets on Thursday you would know what I'm talking about. One of the most infamous "celebrities" is from MTV's reality show "Jersey Shore", Snooki is being used in a whole new marketing strategy. Since, she's not a great person to represent a company well, due to her time on the trashy reality show and recent arrest stint, she has something that companies like-exposure. She's on television and she was known for always carrying around her Coach bag, until recently. It seems that luxury brands have sent her their bags, so she can be seen on tv promoting their products. Why would anyone want to be like Snooki? No one, but people viewing the show would see the bags and may like what they see. It's this subliminal advertising that will be in the heads of those watching the show, that will have them recognizing the item, talking about it, and most likely want it. It's an interesting strategy and there's no bad public relations, especially when you're on a hit tv show.
