Happy Halloween! Custom by Me, Joe Baron

Happy Halloween, Everyone! Since Frankenstorm Sandy hit, I was able to be pretty productive offline and I decided to customize a Kid Robot munny. What you see is what I ended up with.

That's me sketching out my munny, before inking it.

I'm not so much a fan of days 34 & 35, but you can see days 36 and 37 are progressing with an idea. I'm actually working on the continuation for day 38.

Inspiration: Stuntkid aka Jason Levesque

I came across the artwork of Jason Levesque last week and really liked it. It's predominantly filled with illustrations of women with a many pieces using a pastel palette. He does have prints and original pieces for sale. Below are some images that I favor from his portfolio. To view more work go to http://blog.stuntkid.com/

Water Color Dripping Red Skull by Paul Alexander Thornton

Here's a video of Paul Alexander Thornton who creates a skull that drips. It's interesting to see that he does not draw the skull first, but maybe you think it's not. Watch the video.

Metal Ink website is up for sale

I made a post about Metal Ink Shop last February about saving the site, but now this once tattoo style t-shirt contest site is up for sale. It had the potential to be a really good site, but when you're doing a contest site and you're constantly dishing out cash prizes, you need to be making some revenue to compensate for the prizes. It's a shame that companies like these go under or any company for that matter, but you need traffic and people buying to continue. Yes, you may have plenty of artists compete, but I know some that although they do submit they do not buy. I always thought that was odd to create a certain look many times, but not interested in purchasing anything similar that, just designing it. I feel with contest sites you should like what they're selling or if you're submitting you would definitely wear what you created. It bugs me, since this is not a job, but more a fun part of the graphic design field. I don't know. Either way contact info@metalinkshop.com and maybe you can revamp this site to your own liking. Maybe a clothing line with nothing, but metallic ink on all apparel. Just a thought.

Screen printing with human blood!

Now this is cool and very creepy. One of the guys from the Flaming Lips decided to get his blood taken and use his blood to create a print. The print came out pretty cool I must say, but would YOU buy a print that used someone's real blood?

Random sketches

I did have a goal to sketch more and sketch everyday, but sometimes I get caught up with life. Here are two random sketches. I worked on it a little bit on the computer as you can see some line work and a watercolor bottom on the female. I definitely want to work on some more sketches and illustrations.

Ventilate Poster Series 3 THEME: 2000

The website Ventilate asked a couple of artists to participate in their third poster series. The theme was 2000 and none of the artists had the Y2k bug stopping them. They asked the artists What inspired you ten years ago? What was it that caused you to strive forward? What enticed you to experiment and push boundaries? The artists that participated were Joshua Smith aka Hydro74, Marco Vinicio, Jois Tai & Rex Advincula, Jason Doherty, Jodi Terwilliger, and Michael & Yuko Brown. All of the posters are free and ready for print at 300dpi. It's great that you can get some cool artwork to have your room, office, etc. and do not have to dig into your pockets for them. It's interesting to see how these artists interpret this theme. I know it's personal, but maybe you would think that they would be very similar. You can download the other poster series as well. Pictures of Hothead Shirt from Ript Apparel

Here are pictures from the design that was up for sale on Ript Apparel The print came out pretty nice. I immediately rocked it, because it came out pretty good. This design was one that I had no idea where it was going to go. I know it's not a great design, but it was cool...excuse me I mean hot. The finishing product on any design usually makes a big difference from when you see it on the screen to in your hands. It looked really good, one thing I did notice is it looks like it's going to crack. At least on one of the two shirts. I hope it doesn't, but it does have a nice soft feel and usually when you print on red shirts, it's a pain for it not to crack. At least that's with white ink, you want to avoid red shirts. I'm not saying it won't look good or come out printed fine, it's just something to be aware of. I do know I added a bunch of distress and halftone distress effects on it. I made the design with the intention of halftones, so it limits the printing cost, but they made all the colors solid. Ript Apparel did an amazing job printing this design. I definitely would like to have another limited edition exclusive design on their site for sale again. They're a good company, so look everyday for an exclusive limited edition design on their site promoting different artists. Thank you Ript Apparel!
